The Yellow Rose of Texas
By David R
The Yellow Rose of Texas-
This interpretation of the Yellow Rose of Texas is very similar to that in which was played during the civil war. A predominant march, this song heavily relies on percussion, in particular the snare drum. In addition to this, high woodwinds are a very important aspect of this piece. The people who are singing this song have a deep voice and are most likely all men. I believe, there is a very good chance that this is a recording, possibly of a mock battle or reenactment. Elvis Presley-
This version of the Yellow Rose of Texas combines the old marching song with a different country feel. Anytime a song is sung by Elvis Presley, you know it is important. It appears that this song is being sung either as part of a video, or at a dance or a ho-down. In this song, instruments such as the flute, trumpet, and string bass are featured. I find it interesting that they have incorporated the string bass into this. In fact, it would be interesting to see how the string base sounds in proportion to our band. This interpretation of the Yellow Rose of Texas really peaked my interest due to its contrasting style of the original march. Only a few songs can be sang in many different genres and sound good, and the Yellow Rose of Texas is one of them. |
Relation to the Blue and the GreyThe Blue and the Grey is a piece of change. Constantly modifying the mood in which the piece is in, Clare Grundman provides excitement, disappointment, struggle, and determination, all in one piece. In The Blue and the Grey, The Yellow Rose of Texas provides brightness, excitement, and an upbeat attitude. By adding The Yellow Rose of Texas to his piece, Grundman is able to add a part of the Civil War that is sometimes disregarded. Without the upbeat rhythm of The Yellow Rose of Texas, the piece would not be the same.

Historical BackgroundThe Yellow Rose of Texas was originally a folk song in colonial Texas. Although the original writer of this piece is unknown, it was believed to have been written around 1836 by a soldier in Tennessee. This song was written of an African American who leaves his girlfriend and yearns to be with her again. The song was published by Charles Brown in 1858 where it became a favorite among civil war soldiers. The Yellow Rose of Texas was a common song on the battlefield, both in Texas and everywhere else. Towards the end of the war, another stanza was added to this song. It appeared that the war was coming to an end and the Yellow Rose of Texas was a popular song for soldiers on their was home.

No other darky [sic] knows her, no darky only me She cryed [sic] so when I left her it like to broke my heart, And if I ever find her, we nevermore will part. [Chorus] She's the sweetest rose of color this darky ever knew, Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew; You may talk about your Dearest May, and sing of Rosa Lee, But the Yellow Rose of Texas beats the belles of Tennessee. When the Rio Grande is flowing, the starry skies are bright, She walks along the river in the quite [sic] summer night: She thinks if I remember, when we parted long ago, I promised to come back again, and not to leave her so. [Chorus] Oh now I'm going to find her, for my heart is full of woe, And we'll sing the songs togeather [sic], that we sung so long ago We'll play the bango gaily, and we'll sing the songs of yore, And the Yellow Rose of Texas shall be mine forevermore. [Chorus] |
